Finally, The Late Night Hits Begin
During the campaign, there was plenty of discussion about why most of the late night jokes were targeted at Sarah Palin, John McCain, and even Joe Biden. Barack Obama, the Messiah, was unscathed a vast majority of the time. Even while he provided plenty of material, the comics were like dripping water spigots whereas if it was anyone else, they would’ve been a waterfall. That’s changing though, and we’re starting to see the President’s invincibility fade. Via Hot Air, Jay Leno ripping the GM takeover:
I agree completely that most of the jokes were directed at Palin and McCain, in fact by a 7:1 ratio. However, considering the number of gaffes, most of them being Palin. The bridge to nowhere, expensive wardrobes, seeing Russia, can’t name a single paper she reads… Most the McCain jokes were directed at his age. Lest we forget when McCain suspended his campaign… A large portion cam from when McCain skipped his Letterman interview, after the ratio turned from a 5:1 to a 16.5:1. Most of the ones directed at Biden were because of age and his obvious gaffes. Who can forget when he talked about FDR getting on TV when the stock market crashed in October 1929. Herbert Hoover was president and there was no TV. I think D.L. Hughley offered the best insight.
“Comic D.L. Hughley, who recently began a comedy show on CNN, believes there’s a hesitation among white comedy writing staffs and late-night hosts to joke about a black candidate. Fearing a slip into something considered offensive, some comics are conservative.
He jokes about how it might be for a white man to be the first to lose a campaign for president to a black — “that’s got to look bad at the country club.” Hughley, who’s black, delivers the joke easily for a laugh but wonders whether white comics would even think of such a line or say it.
Obama has also been relatively bland during the campaign, more difficult to caricature, Hughley said.
“If you only depended on the Obama-Biden ticket for jokes, you’d go out of business,” Lichter said. “There’s nothing there.”".
Plus let’s face it, Palin is a dream come true for jokes, after all she herself is a joke.
“However, considering the number of gaffes, most of them being Palin.”
no, Biden was the gaffe candidate. obama second. then palin. then mccain. biden told a cripple to stand up. obama said there were 57 states. obama stumbled over his words for a full minute in bristol, virginia.
the couric video was edited, and CBS editors admitted to editing it to make it look bad. Katie Couric was even said to refuse to call Palin “governor”.
“Plus let’s face it, Palin is a dream come true for jokes, after all she herself is a joke.”
except she had accomplished more than obama and had more experience as well.
obama gaffed a ton, and the media is admitting that they weren’t harsh enough on him.
Of course, the media edited it to make her look bad, how silly of me. I didn’t realize that they could change the words Palin said, oh wait, they can’t. She thought Africa was a country, didn’t know what the Bush Doctrine is, couldn’t name any other supreme court decisions besides Roe V Wade, thought South Africa was the southern part of the country of Africa, told a 3rd grader that the VP is in charge of the Senate, doesn’t understand that 1st amendment rights don’t protect her from criticism, said Afghanistan is our neighboring country, can’t name a single newspaper she reads, tells the moderator in the debate that she may not answer the questions they ask but it’s ok because she’s going to talk to the American people straight, can see Russia from her house so she has foreign policy experience. There’s more too.
She did accomplish a lot, in 5 years as mayor of a town of 5,000 here’s what she accomplished. She secure $27 million in earmarks, per person that was 22 times higher than the national average. After she removed several veteran officials her quote in the paper was It’s not rocket science, it’s $6 million and 53 employees.” Palin took over office with a $4 million surplus and received $27 million in earmarks. After five years in a town of 6,000, Palin left the city $20 million in debt. Fiscal responsibility… SO how does she have more experience and accomplished more than Obama. He was on a foreign relations committee and because he doesn’t have a lot of experience on foreign relations he picked a VP with them. Obama has more experience than Palin, he has served in the Federal and State Senates, Plain was a disaster as mayor and has been governor a short time. In which she managed to break the state ethics laws and pushed for the bridge to nowhere. Her gaffes don;t surprise me though, she attended five colleges in six years ending up with a degree in communications from the University of Idaho. At least Bush was a C average at a prestigious school.
Please show me where the media is admitting that they weren’t harsh enough on Obama. I tried to look for some evidence of this, surprise, can’t find any… Also show how Palin has more experience (which doesn’t always mean someone is better, I’ll take judgement and intelligence over experience) and is more accomplished than Obama.
Sich is a moron and a pathological liar. I will mention only one comment and it will be good enough for his entire entry. Sarah Palin never said she could see Russia from her house. It was Tina Feye on Saturday Night Live you big idiotic jerk. Next time you want to cut someone down, get your facts straight. Enough said.
Sich sounds like a snot-nosed, latte-sipping liberal. What the hell has he accomplished? Certainly not mayor or governor. Get a life!
Sully, thank you for correcting my mistake. There is no excuse for me not researching that remark thoroughly. I would’ve been correct if I said that Palin said that you can see Russia from Alaska, or that because she lived close to Russia it gave her foreign policy experience. Please, feel free to correct other points of my post that are not true, however, until you can do that dismissing my entire post because of one mistake does not make my entire post false or me a moron or pathological liar. By your logic if when I was 5 I hurt someone physically that makes me a bad person that hurts people because of one action. I find it hilarious that you judge an entire body of work based on a small part. You must be very hard to shop for, because by your logic if you read one word in a book that you don’t like or is false, the entire book must be false and bad. Maybe you should read the rest of the post with an open mind and look at the facts that I present.
KimC, my nose i clear right now, I don’t drink lattes (more of the hot chocolate type) and I am not a liberal. Apparently I should have made a copy of my ballot where I voted for an equal number of republicans and democrats, but alas I didn’t know that because I present facts about Palin that I would be accused of being a liberal. I have accomplished many things, I could name them if you would like, and I intend to accomplish many more. You are correct in saying that I have not been a mayor or governor, what that proves I don’t know. I would assume you’re saying something like who are you to judge Palin, but assumptions are often false so I don’t want to commit myself to that. I have a life, or else I would not be typing this, and I am quite happy with my life.
My, my aren’t we touchy. What is that dopey analogy of you being a 5 year old? I wont even touch that. You talk about pointing out your facts. How do you come to the conclusion Sarah Palin is a joke herself? Its only your idiotic and partiality that makes that impression. thus you are a moron. Even the fact that she can see Russia from Alaska is no big deal. When I am in Tennessee, there are signs that say “I can see seven states from here.” Whats the point of your criticism? Its just political idiocy and not worthy of discussion. What ever your point of saying “she could see Alaska from her house” shows your inability to think or as I called it a lie. You want uninformed idiots like yourself who read or hear that kind of stuff to believe it. You were hoping we would all believe you. NOT. Obama said he traveled 57 states with one more to go and his staff would not allow him to go to Alaska and Hawaii. That was 60 if you are counting. I say he is lacking intelligence and is geographically challenged. Of all the ineffectual mistakes you say Palin made, they are just as equal to the gaffes Obama has made and liberals say its because he was “exhausted” on the campaign trail. Yea right! Did anyone give George Bush a pass on exhaustion, hell no. He was always the dumbest of the dumb. When Obama tried to open a window on the Capitol porch it was hilarious, but the media never showed it. George Bush tries to open a locked door (at least it was a door) in China and they are still laughing. More political idiocy.
Under Palin’s watch, Alaska added $1,200 to the annual checks sent to Alaskans as part of what’s called the Permanent Fund Dividend, a stipend from the proceeds of the state’s more than $30 billion oil-rich investment account. That translated to a record $3,269 in fall 2008 for every eligible man, woman and child in Alaska. Her debt in Wasilla was due to the Wasilla Sports Complex touted as Palin’s crowning achievement and is now bringing in millions above and beyond the debt. Liberals never report the good of the story. What has Obama done in comparison? He complains of inheriting debt from Bush, but he is going to leave the United States with triple the debt and possibly more. Again, I don’t get your criticism.
Obama did not lead a single policy hearing on any of the hot topics on the Foreign Relations Committee panel’s jurisdiction: missile defense, counter terrorism and concern over the waning commitment of European countries to NATO. He had a seat in the senate, but he voted no or just present to most situations. He was the poorest of the poor examples of a senator. Most liberal of all. He now wants us to believe he is moderate. Yea right!
