Sprockets, Dodgeball, Bruno…RNC?

There’s a long history of Americans delighting in mocking German tastes in film, television, and music.  Who can forget the old Mike Myers skit on SNL, Sprockets, or David Hasselhoff’s appearance in Dodgeball (only one of the greatest comedies of the last quarter century).  For that matter, Sacha Baron Cohen (of Borat fame) is filming a movie as we speak about a gay German/Austrian fashion critic named Bruno

In that vein, the RNC had the gumption (how’s that for an old-timer word) to make a spoof of Obama’s self-aggrandizing trip overseas and posted it online:

It appears that others are saying that the ad doesn’t reach out to seniors.  Old people simply won’t get it.  Okay.  But young people (say, yours truly) definitely will.  The RNC needs to reach to both young and old demographics.  This is like dinging Metamucil for not having teenagers in their ads…I wonder why?

I’ve never caught my grandparents (or parents for that matter) watching the Daily Show, Colbert, Conan, or any other TV show that have predominantly young audiences and combine comedy with politics.  The RNC is stepping to the plate with a decent entry (I’ll admit not the best); but for an internet spoof ad it gets the job done.

  1. I think the ad is brilliant (at least the snark, that is). I’d wager the video camera that filmed these responses (aka Paris-Hilton-wannabee: ‘Like, chyea, I think Obama would make Americans not like shallow like and stuff’) was not up to snuff, which probably limited the production value and quality.

People should learn to take a joke!

  2. Not bad. Bot great either. I have to disagree with you on one thing though…Dodgeball is terrible.

  3. [...] have to say, I like McCain’s new pop-culture friendly ad much more than the German techno web ad, but I suppose they’re playing to two different audiences. The McCain camp, hitting on [...]
