Obama Unveils New Energy Policy
Barack Obama, at a campaign stop in Missouri today, unveiled a new energy policy that’s sure to solve all of our oil and fuel needs. Simply put, the Messiah had an idea that we should’ve been pursuing all along, and in his infinite wisdom showed us the error in our ways. Too profound for words:
BARACK OBAMA: “There are things that you can do individually though to save energy; making sure your tires are properly inflated, simple thing, but we could save all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling, if everybody was just inflating their tires and getting regular tune-ups. You could actually save just as much.”
I can’t believe we didn’t see this before! I can’t believe that we could’ve been saving hundreds of millions of barrels of oil, billions even, by just making sure our tires are inflated!
The audacity of utterly useless policy.
Thanks for the video. I feel that both candidates are retarded, and possibly the worst choices we’ve ever had.
Using one of my cars as a real-world example (a retired police car with a big gas guzzling V-8), my mileage went from about 16 mpg in mixed driving to just over 19 after a tune-up. That’s 3 mpg better mileage, which is significant since that’s an extra 300 miles per 100 gallons of gas purchased. It was about a 15% increase in mileage just by installing new plugs and wires. My number 7 and number 8 cylinders, the two at the rear of the engine, were probably never replaced by the previous owners. Both were badly fouled and the electrodes were all but gone.
My tires hold air pretty well, but in some of the vehicles I’ve driven in the past, under-inflation caused some loss of mileage, but nothing drastic.
In any case, I still burn tons of gas and it’s way too expensive right now! I don’t see how not drilling is going to lower the $600 a month it costs to heat my house in the winter months of December through February — and that’s with the thermostat at 63F.

Well if you DON’T think that vehicle maintenance makes a big difference in gas mileage, then you don’t know much about cars. The statement Obama made is 100% correct, if every vehicle were properly maintained it would easily supplant the amount of oil that we might gain from opening up the drilling for which the Republicans are proposing. You might want to stay in school a little longer, and learn a little something, before commenting on subjects you know nothing of and thereby advertizing your ignorance to the entire world.
Fuel efficiency you can expect to gain from various types of vehicle maintenance:
Tune up: 4%
Air filter: 10%
Tire inflation: 3%
Using correct grade of motor oil: 1-2%
But hey, don’t let facts get in the way of your political ideology.
Peter, assuming your figures are accurate, and all of us gain 18% efficiency (a ridiculous proposition by the way), would that equal out to the 20 million barrels we could get a day from drilling? No. Do the math.
Hey, I may have been a little harsh in that last comment. Sorry, I don’t want to discourage you. You are still young, and you have a lot to learn, and you’ll have plenty of opportunity ahead of you to do so. And hey, even if you don’t learn anything you’ll have a fall back position. You can always be a Republican. No need to learn any actual facts behind the issues you’re discussing, just go with the conservative, ideological, party line every time, and you’ll have no need to think for yourself whatsoever! In other words, it’s like Cliff Notes. No need to do any homework, just regurgitate what other people tell you to think! What a great concept, eh? Heck, you wouldn’t even need to waste your money finishing school, you’re already qualified!
I see we have another tolerance-preaching liberal here…
While Obama had a point about inflating tires, people don’t have time and won’t put in the effort to inflate their tires as often as they need to…and the line makes for GREAT tv ad fodder. Thanks Barack.
Well looks like your having trouble with your facts again. 200 million barrels per day? Did you get that from Limbaugh or something? That number is so far off it’s laughable.
20 million barrels of oil a day… and let me apologize, that’s the amount we use, not precisely drill for. We theoretically could drill for that amount for decades by drilling off-shore, in ANWR, and in the rockies. A century’s worth actually.
Hey Viking,
What happened to personal responsibility? People don’t have time to properly maintain their cars, so government should bail them out? And that’s assuming that opening up more drilling would actually make a difference in prices at the pump, which, according to Bush’s own Energy Information Administration, it would not. Facts, people, facts.
Oh, and I’m plenty tolerant, but when uninformed people make stupid statements, and ridicule other people based on factually incorrect information, I do admit that I sometimes enjoy ridiculing them in return for their ignorance. Just because I may be liberal in some of my positions doesn’t mean I will turn the other cheek.
Ok Jusin, now your getting a little closer. But, if you think we have domestic reserves that are the equivalent of what we consume right now, you are still WAY off. Again I ask, where are you getting your numbers?
I read something here about 100 years worth in oil shale alone- http://hotair.com/archives/2008/07/30/obamas-energy-plan-drilling-tires/
“I can’t believe that we could’ve been saving hundreds of millions of barrels of oil, billions even, by just making sure our tires are inflated!”
Excuse me, stupid little liar. Did Obama cite “millions” or “billions” of barrels of oil? Hmmmmm?
Straw man again. You really are too dumb to make an argument without pulling crap out of thin air, aren’t you?
Now, as you suggested, stupid little liar — let’s do the math.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, “every pound per square inch of tire underinflation wastes 4 million gallons of gas daily in the U.S.” Survey information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that 27% of the cars on the road have a significantly under-inflated tire.
Obviously, Obama wasn’t arguing that inflating tires would reduce the nation’s dependence on foreign oil — but he was saying such a move would save as much energy as drilling for oil in the continental shelf would provide.
Is that true?
If it does save gas, and it is a common problem, well, then what would the total savings be if we all were a bit more diligent about checking the pressure very morning?
Frank Verrastro, Director and Senior Fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), says that it’s complicated, of course.
“The ‘x’ factors here are the fact that Sen. Obama used both tire inflation and tune ups in his remarks, and no one knows what volume you could/would get from additional drilling in the outer continental shelf,” Verrastro says.
As of now, all we have for the OCS are resource estimates, but no production.
Using the website FuelEconomy.gov, Verrastro writes, we can estimate that “the maximum (estimated) fuel economy (i.e., mileage) savings drivers could expect as a result of keeping their engines properly tuned (4%), replacing air filters (up to 10%), properly inflating tires (up to 3%) and using the correct motor oil (1-2%) is 18-19%. Since American drivers use roughly 380 million gallons of gasoline (not including diesel) per day, an 18% improvement translates into a savings of 68 million gallons, or 1.62 million barrels of oil per day.”
Current crude oil and condensate production in the OCS is about 1.25 million barrels per day.
So… What does that mean?
So… What does that mean, Justin? It means that once again, your long record of carefully cultivated ignorance is safe. Congratulations, Justin: your new blog is going to be a shining monument to just how wrong one immature chickenhawk can be.
Obama said “all the oil they’re talking about” which would be billions, dumbass.
Also, Justin’s obviously not wasting his time in the comments so talk to me, I dare you, DEBATE ME!
