The Emperor’s Old Clothes
Obama’s been disrobed and now he’s screaming for a blanket to cover up his bare…flaws.
Namely: the biggest ego in American politics since John Adams. And John Adams isn’t “on the dollar bills” so I guess it’s okay if Obama reminds me of him. (For the record, I like John Adams - and this is meant in no way to disparage the great Patriot he was)
Just yesterday, I commented on how important narratives are in presidential campaigns. Well, it looks like Obama’s helping the RNC write his. Let’s take a minute to reflect on some of the ways Obama has displayed a shocking level of presumption and arrogance:
1- In what is perhaps become the single greatest icon of Obama’s opinion of himself, Obama for America Himself created its own presidential seal.
2- Obama decides that being the American President isn’t enough; he’s got this in the bag anyways. Where else? I know: Europe.
3- Obama’s already talking about when he “was” a United Senator. I’ve always been of the opinion that he’s never not been running for President. After all, can anyone name one significant thing he’s done in either the US or Illinois Senates? I’d want to put that kind of record in the past too. (And I just found out about this today there are so many to keep track of)
4- Obama apparently can bend time and space in ways that include more than just not being a US Senator anymore. He also plans on serving as President for “8-10 years.” I don’t think Einstein would say this is possible. But then again, he only went to Princeton.
5- And, my own personal favorite: Air Obama. For a man that used to disagree with wearing flag lapel pins then reverse, flip-flop, waffle and decide to wear one again; this comes as no surprise. The American flag is clearly not a symbol of America because Obama is. So why leave that drab, 200+ year old thing just sitting there on their snazzy, new plane?
The Obama campaign’s pushback on the notion Obama is somehow not arrogant is categorically false. Douglas Schoen, a former Clinton aide and Democratic pollster, agrees, evidently: “My sense is that all of those attacks individually are frankly not particularly potent, but taken together, they are creating a narrative about Obama that is not helpful.” (My emphasis added)
If you want a narrative, Aesop or Homer couldn’t come up with a better one than Obama’s already written for himself.
Plainly, he is nothing but an empty vessel for deluded, Bush-obsessed liberals to pour all their “hopes” into. What they’re about to find, however, is that there’s no space left next to Obama’s huge, naked ego.
Obama is the definitive “Paris Hilton of American Politics:” A vapid, attention-seeking individual who fell into their current position as a course of chance (ie, a speech before the 2004 Democratic Convention).
Don’t take my word for it, though, take Senator Obama’s. In 2004 the Senator-elect was quoted as such: “Andy Warhol said we all get our 15 minutes of fame. I’ve already had an hour and a half. I mean, I’m so overexposed, I’m making Paris Hilton look like a recluse.”
People that agree with me (and so are awesome): HotAir talks about “The One”
Note: For a slightly lighter take on some of the absurdity:
John Stewart and
David Letterman have some pretty funny stuff.
Dear Tommy,
Overall, I like your article. However, to equate Barack Obama, someone who has done nothing with everything, to someone like John Adams, who gave this country so much, is not right. While Adams had a big ego, I think it is as nothing compared to Barack Obama. Adams actually stood for something. He actually had to make hard decisions. He actually took the harder path, like when he chose to defend those redcoats in the Boston Massacre case, like when he chose to put his sacred honor on the line, and when he chose certain actions as president. His sedition acts were over the top, but Adams was a great patriot who believed in the promise of America. Obama is nothing more than an egomaniac who believes in the promise of power and the stupidity of Americans to fall for emptyheaded straw mans like “change” and “hope” without defining what these mean.
John Adams, for all his faults, believed and loved America, and sought to do the best for it, even with his ego. Barry Obama only seeks out what is best for Barry Obama.
Mark,
I couldn’t agree with you more. I only mentioned John Adams because a) the example is fresh in my mind having recently read McCullough’s masterpiece - and watching the HBO special and b) Obama made that ludicrous (or is it ludacris) comment about not looking like the other presidents we’ve had.
Baroque Obozo is gradually morphing into the ‘Seinfeld candidate’….a campaign sitcom about nothing….not that there’s anything wrong with THAT!
Ahh, I see, Tommy. Now in the frame of context of your experience, it does make some sense. BTW, wasn’t Franklin such a tool in the HBO miniseries? I mean, yes, his diplomacy was backchannel (take it as a double entendre if you must) and proved effective at times, but oboy, was he a royal pain and a guy who probably shaped Adams’ disdain for certain things that led to some of Adams leadership flaws as president.
And I think Obama does look like another president we have had…with that goofy grin and the big ol ears, he looks like JimmyCarter and Prince Charles had a test tube love child….LOL
