Apparently Talk Radio Doesn’t Want to Fill Their Tires

Talk Radio, traditional media, and bloggers have all taken shots on Obama’s new energy policy, which has been the news of today and yesterday. We covered it here first at Shots on the House. Apparently, some of the big names in Conservative Talk Radio think the Messiah’s plan to save billions of barrels of oil by having people fill their tires is stupid:

LIMBAUGH: This is unbelievable! My friends, this is laughable of course, but it’s stupid! It is stupid! How many of you remember the seventies? When we had these shortages, all through the Jimmy Carter years and we have all these tips, all these tips on how to save gasoline? Avoid jackrabbit starts, keep your tires properly inflated, there’s a list of about ten or twelve these things. I said if I follow each one of these things I’ll have to stop the car every five miles, siphon some fuel out, for all the fuel I’m going to be saving. This is ridiculous. This is a presidential candidate and he’s talking about keeping your tires inflated and getting regular tune-ups and that would save as much oil as drilling would produce. And this guy is the Democrat presidential nominee. Who has filled his head with this stuff.

SEAN HANNITY: “All you need to do is inflate your tires! That’s all you need to do. If every American would join in this effort of inflating one’s tires, then it’s all going to be fine! And we can still import 70% of our oil from Saudi Arabia. Just keep those tires inflated. And just keep that car tuned up of yours.

“’The problem is Americans are not being responsible.’ You know what we need? We need a Department of Tire Inflation. If we would just have a government program designed so that every American can have their tires checked on a regular basis. I’ll tell you, I think we probably would be doing a lot better.”

Why all the condescension? Surely this new energy plan will work. Afterall, it’s being proposed by a man who believes in hope and change! Sure, he has no experience making energy policy, or any policy for that matter, but he’s the “One We’ve Been Waiting For.” All you have to do is fill your tires!

  1. Ok Justin, since you won’t tell me your source for the numbers you’re using, I’ll do your homework for you, using the real numbers, from the real, reliable sources.

Just some quick, rough numbers here, not exacting, but good enough for comparison and discussion sake:

Total vehicles in U.S. fleet=135,399,945 cars, 99,124,775 light trucks. CAFE standard for cars=27.5mpg, light trucks=20.5mpg. Assume average miles driven per year=12,000. Total gallons of gas consumed per year= 117.1 billion. That’s 6.00 billion barrels of oil per year (1 barrel produces 19.5 gallons of gas). Average age of all vehicles=9 years, which means average miles on those vehicles is 108k (probably lots of candidates for tune-ups). If all those vehicles aren’t kept tuned the numbers come to 7.41 billion barrels, or a 1.41 billion barrel per year difference.

The predictions for most likely amounts of technically recoverable oil (not economically recoverable) by President Bush’s own EIA have the maximum production from the currently off-limits off shore resources peaking at 2.4 million barrels per day in 2030, that’s 876 million per year. For ANWR it’s a peak of 780,000 barrels per day in 2027, or 284 million per year. Those are peaks, mind you, with a gradual ramp up that starts with the oil first hitting the market 10 years from now, and a gradual dwindling after the peak. A peak total of 1.16 billion barrels per year on the market approximately 20 years from now if we open up these resources.

So Obama’s comment is not at all out of the ballpark. Especially considering that his recommendation can have an immediate impact, today, whereas the EIA says opening the areas for drilling that the Republicans want is not likely to have any significant impact until 2030, and even then the impact on prices will probably be very small (less then $1.50 per barrel of oil), and that could easily be offset by OPEC deciding to cut back production by just a tiny fraction.

Obama’s point, of course (which, although it was very simple and easy to understand, apparently flew right over your head), was that opening up more domestic drilling is not the answer, and he is 100% correct about that. It is a fool’s errand. It would have completely negligible effect, both long and short term, and he gave an off the cuff example of just one thing we all can do that will have a greater immediate impact than the drilling the republicans want. Of course there are many other things we can do as well that will be more effective than drilling, and he has a comprehensive energy plan that you can read about on his web site.

The people who are advocating more domestic drilling know all of this, of course. They are just employing a shock strategy – using the high prices to manipulate the lesser informed citizens into supporting their bid to gain access to more profits at the expense of the American consumer, and to maintain the status quo of our current energy model which preserves their power and profits. Sadly, even if Obama wins the Presidency, they may win this fight on drilling, and in doing so only delay the change in our energy model that is necessary in order to secure our economic prosperity and support our national strategic interests. The cost to our nation will be great if the disinformation campaign and shock strategy of these traitors is successful. And yes, I think that anyone who puts their own wallet over the well-being, security, and strategic interests of our nation is a traitor.

My point in engaging you on your blog, Justin, is this. Don’t be one of those lesser informed citizens who are easily manipulated by propaganda. Don’t take at face value the garbage you are fed by people whose wallet size depends on your unquestionably believing what they tell you. Do your own homework. Find out the truth for yourself. You are young, and you have the opportunity to learn a lot, make the commitment to learn for yourself instead of blindly following people who are trying to scam you.

  2. I want links for all those numbers now so we can break them down point by point. Failure to provide them means you disqualify yourself immediately.

  3. “Apparently, some of the big names in Conservative Talk Radio think the Messiah’s plan to save billions of barrels of oil by having people fill their tires is stupid…”

Apparently, Justin Higgins thinks that lying about what Obama said is smart. Did you think your lies would go unnoticed, little chickenhawk?

Let’s do something that terrifies you, Justin… let’s discuss the facts.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, “every pound per square inch of tire underinflation wastes 4 million gallons of gas daily in the U.S.”  Survey information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that 27% of the cars on the road have a significantly under-inflated tire.

Obviously, Obama wasn’t arguing that inflating tires would reduce the nation’s dependence on foreign oil — but he was saying such a move would save as much energy as drilling for oil in the continental shelf would provide.

    Is that true?

If it does save gas, and it is a common problem, well, then what would the total savings be if we all were a bit more diligent about checking the pressure very morning?

Frank Verrastro, Director and Senior Fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), says that it’s complicated, of course.

“The ‘x’ factors here are the fact that Sen. Obama used both tire inflation and tune ups in his remarks, and no one knows what volume you could/would get from additional drilling in the outer continental shelf,” Verrastro says.

As of now, all we have for the OCS are resource estimates, but no production.

Using the website FuelEconomy.gov, Verrastro writes, we can estimate that “the maximum (estimated) fuel economy (i.e., mileage) savings drivers could expect as a result of keeping their engines properly tuned (4%), replacing air filters (up to 10%), properly inflating tires (up to 3%) and using the correct motor oil (1-2%) is 18-19%.  Since American drivers use roughly 380 million gallons of gasoline (not including diesel) per day, an 18% improvement translates into a savings of 68 million gallons, or 1.62 million barrels of oil per day.”

Current crude oil and condensate production in the OCS is about 1.25 million barrels per day.

    So… What does that mean?

So… What does that mean, Justin? It means that once again, your long record of carefully cultivated ignorance is safe. Congratulations, Justin: your new blog is going to be a shining monument to just how wrong one immature chickenhawk can be.

  4. Who the hell is this guy? Getting off to lying in defense of Obama and attacking a site where he’s not welcome?

  5. “Getting off to lying in defense of Obama…”

Cite the specific statement I have made in this thread that is false, jackwad.

“…and attacking a site where he’s not welcome?”

I post where I please. Deal with it, moron.

  6. “I want links for all those numbers now so we can break them down point by point. Failure to provide them means you disqualify yourself immediately.”

Oh I see, because you’re so grossly ignorant of an uncomplicated subject, and apparantely too lazy to do a few Googles, I’m disqualified? Hahahahahahahaha! Boy, sure seems like you’re trying awfully hard to remain an ignorant dufus.

Well ok, lazyboy, here are links to the Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration site where you will find the numbers regarding the ANWR and OCS reserves that I quoted:

    http://www.eia.doe.gov/oiaf/aeo/otheranalysis/ongr.html
    http://www.eia.doe.gov/oiaf/servicerpt/anwr/results.html

And here is another link to a site run by DOE and EPA that explains the effects of vehicle maintenance on gas mileage:

    http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/maintain.shtml

And here’s a Wiki page that presents vehicle fleet data from the US Bureau of Transit Statistics.

Now I’ll be interested to see what hoops you jump through so that you can remain willfully ignorant. The Republicans are making a joke out of the tire pressure thing, but Obama was right. Do you think the Republicans are too stupid to not know he was right? Of course not, but they are counting on people who are too ignorant to know any better, and too lazy to find out for themselves, and too ideologically constrained to think for themselves, to fall for their little joke. You may think they are laughing with you, but they are laughing at you, because you are so easily duped into supporting policy that benefits only people who want to maintain the staus quo in our energy model so that they can hold on to their power and line their pockets. Unfortunately, they line their pockets at the peril of our nation, and more unfortunately, they will probably be successful because there at too many people like you who, for whatever reason, swallow their BS willingly.
