OSU- Ohio’s Spending is Unbelievable
I’m here, I enjoy the benefits, and I understand that staff, facilities, and research cost a lot of money. I understand my tuition would go up if the state didn’t chip in what they did. I don’t understand why I didn’t know the extreme amounts of money some employees are making here at The Ohio State University. The Buckeye Institute, in an effort to increase government transparency, has released a report on the high spending:
“Ohio State’s hiring of outgoing Democrat State Rep. Joyce Beatty to a loosely defined post reportedly earning $320,000 a year piqued our interest,” Buckeye Institute President David Hansen said. “We discovered this type of salary, while on the extreme high end in academia, is commonplace at Ohio State.”
“Ohio State pays 154 employees at least $250,000 a year, with university president E. Gordon Gee topping the list at $775,000 a year,” transparency center director Mike Maurer said. Mr. Gee’s total annual pay package, between $1.6 million to $2 million, makes him the highest paid public university president in the nation, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education and the Columbus Dispatch.
“Our goal is to increase taxpayer awareness of public expenditures, including salaries,” Maurer added. “Taxpayers want a complete picture of government funding and expenditures. The Buckeye Institute will collect and provide it online in an easily accessible format.”
Higher education is a competitive market and getting the best education is a huge concern for many Americans, obviously including myself. Making the process of paying employees a little more transparent (especially when it comes to state-subsidized schools) should be a priority though. Our state’s facing a financial crackdown and we have former elected officials making over $300 grand at a state institution? Unbelievable.
Justin, they have to have something to justify those huge Pell Grants and Stafford Student loans that never get paid back. Just go down and lift weights or swim in the indoor pool and ease your mind.
[...] with lots of good posts on what makes sense and what doesn’t. Here’s his hat tip to the Buckeye Institute, but he’s got lots of good stuff before & [...]
Jim Tressel makes $3.5 million a year, more than four times what Gee makes. Maybe the cuts should start there…
